Trade
Week of Action: Right to Food Guide
Just
published in August 2008, this revised Trade Week booklet
introduces the Trade Week of Action on the Right to Food
at a time when food prices are pushing millions more into
poverty. The guide explores the interactions between trade,
agriculture, food and human rights. It considers what
the Bible has to say about trade and food, and tells the
stories of real people affected by free trade policies.
The guide offers action ideas, liturgy and other worship
resources.

Presbyterian

Trade and Investment to raise ethical questions that we,
as people of faith, should be asking in the process leading
up to the reauthorization of the Farm Bill in 2007. The

FAITH-BASED
GLOBALIZATION CURRICULA
GLOBALIZATION
at What Price?: Economic Change and Daily Life
By Pamela K. Brubaker. This may be the premier primer
for Christians on globalization, and comes with provocative
reflection and study questions at the end of each
short chapter. Acronyms are explained, the basics
of globalization are described, the faith connection
is clarified through biblical passages and interpretation
by First and Majority World feminist theologians.
The book is very accessible, is both practical and
theological, and comes with discussion questions following
each of the five short chapters, with final chapters
- 'What Can I Do?' and 'Can We Really Make a Difference?'
Excellent. Pilgrim Press, Cleveland, OH, www.pilgrimpress.com,
2001.
Another
faith-based economic globalization curriculum is "Global
Economics: Seeking a Christian Ethic. A workbook for
beginners." by Ian McCrae, Friendship Press,
1993. ISBN 0-377-00253-4. $7.95. Distribution Offices:
PO Box 37844, Cincinnati, OH 45222-0844. Or your local
independent book store can order you multiple copies.
It looks very good.
Either of these, used in combination with the congregational
lifestyle/ global discipleship of the Enough for Everyone
programs, would make for a rich study and action approach
for your congregation. www.pcusa.org/enough

BOOKS
Globalization
at What Price?: Economic Change and Daily Life
by Pamela K. Brubaker.
While not a PC(USA) resource, this is the best biblically-based
look at economic globalization that I've found. The
book is very accessible, is both practical and theological,
and comes with discussion questions following each
of the five short chapters. Index and acronym list
included! Published by The Pilgrim Press, http://pilgrimpress.com
in 2001.
Development
Matters: Christian Perspectives on Globalization
Edited by Charles Reed, Publisher: Church House Publishing
; Price:£7.95
Looking at diverse areas such as international development,
world trade, global warming, HIV/AIDS and e-commerce,
this collection of essays helps Christians to grapple
with the complexity of globalization. Drawn from differing
theological and political backgrounds, each chapter
is written by an expert in his or her field.
Global
Pillage or Global Village?: Economic Reconstruction
From the Bottom Up
by Jeremy Brecher and Tim Costello (see video below)
This book combines perfectly the thorough criticism
of academic literature and the accessibility of popular
writing to clearly communicate how multinational corporations
have played different population bases against one
another and what those groups are doing to build a
common set of standards to counter the race to the
bottom.
"This
book is much more than a critiques of the new economic
world order, it's a practical guide for action...for
those who want to think globally and work locally
on the economy, trade, and the environment."
-Elaine Bernard, executive director, Trade Union Program,
Harvard University. South End sells both the book
and video at http://www.southendpress.org/books/gvgp2.shtml
Unequal
Protection: the Rise of Corporate Dominance and the
Theft of Human Rights. By Thom Hartman. Rodale,
Inc., 2002.
"Beneath
the success and rise of American enterprise is an
untold history that is antithetical to every value
Americans hold dear. This is a seminal work, a godsend
really, a clear message to every citizen about the
need to reform our country, laws, and companies."
- Paul Hawken, author of Natural Capitalism
and The Ecology of Commerce.
"Hartmann
combines a remarkable piece of historical research
with a brilliant literary style to tell the grand
story of corporate corruption and its consequences
for society with the force and readability of a
great novel. I intended to take a first quick glance
and then couldn't put it down."

"Global
Village or Global Pillage," based on Jeremy
Brecher and Tim Costello's book (directly above).
It is narrated by Ed Asner and is excellent. Very
compelling, it touches on the social, labor, environmental
and economic implications of corporate globalization.
Hope is found in the existence and potential for globalization
from below; people and people's organizations joining
hands to oppose the destruction and injustice of corporate
globalization. It has a progressive analysis, but
is well-researched enough to have an impact on skeptical
viewers.

Kicking
Away the Ladder: The "Real" History of Free
Trade
By Ha-Joon Chang, December, 2003; Foreign Policy
in Focus (FPIF)
This FPIF Special Report debunks the myth that the
United States and England, among other now-developed
nations, practiced free trade during their economic
development. Rather, they vigorously promoted their
national industries through tariffs, subsidies and
other measures. This was the "ladder" used
to achieve economic prosperity. Chang argues that
free trade agreements, promoted most vehemently by
the "developed world," are kicking away
critical approaches and tools needed by poorer nations.

for Peace in El Salvador - CRISPAZ publishes
Salvanet quarterly. The April-June
2003 issue contains several articles related to
trade and the global economy. Of note is the interview
with Juan Rojas, of the Permaculture Institute in
La Florida, El Salvador. Here are a couple excerpts:
"But
look at what happened in Mexico after NAFTA: Mexican
bean farmers are abstaining from growing beans because
the market is inundated with beans at a price thirty
percent below what it costs them to produce beans.
More than a million and a half corn farmers in southern
Mexico were displaced when U.S. corn was brought
onto the market. The consumers might get cheaper
corn, but many of the farmers have had to migrate
to the U.S. out of desperation."
..."In
the past, there were programs that bought basic
grains from small farmers at a decent price and
sold them at reduced prices to poor families. But
these kinds of programs were abandoned with the
rise of neoliberal thinking... Now, food security
depends on each family. Our farmers survive because
they create their own food security, putting away
enough corn and beans to last them through the year.
That's why each year we wait anxiously for the rains
to come, because for us, this is life, this means
we will have a little bit of food."

Addressing Globalization
PC(USA) General Assembly Council staff

The Just Trade Consultation was the last in a
series of worldwide consultations which have taken
place since 1999. The Declaration and Action Plan
