The Office of Congregational Transformation offers a variety of strategies, tools, and support systems that can help your congregation remake itself. You need to start the process by reflecting on some essential questions, which we've listed below. In addition, consider the resources listed here.

If you have questions or need help in your congregation's journey, please contact our staff.

  gold rule
How do I know if my congregation is ready for transformation?

Transformation is about change, so the question is: "Are you ready for change?" And it’s not just about changing programs, buildings, leadership, and worship. It is about Spiritual Transformation.

  • If God is renewing your faith through prayer and bible study,
  • If some in your congregation are wondering, “ What if… ,
  • If you see ministry opportunities that
    your congregation is not addressing.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God — what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2)

Then you are ready for transformation and God only needs one person to start a transformation. Find a few friends and see what God has in store for you and your congregation.

How do we get started in transformation?

The transformation leaders I have talked to tell me the most important element of their transformation process is prayer. One congregation invited the leadership to pray for the congregation for 30 minutes for 30 days. Another congregation prayed regularly for the people who used the church building.

But prayer without action is like trying to ride a bicycle without letting your feet leave the ground. At some point you have to start pedaling if you hope to go anywhere.

So ask yourself… "What is God calling me to be and do? What action can I take today? Tomorrow? In the next three weeks? What do I want to happen in the next three months? Three years?"

Our church needs more people and more money. Will transformation increase our membership and help us balance the budget?

No, maybe, yes.

Some congregations who are in the midst of transformation have increased their membership and their budgets. We have a significant number of transforming congregations who are growing in mission, ministry, membership and resources, but that has been the result of their transformation not their goal. Their goal has always been to be a witness to God’s grace and love.

Other congregations have been transformed to the point where they have learned how to be the Body of Christ with the members and the money they have. They may no longer need a full time pastor or they may have sold their building, or found new partners in for their mission and ministry.
