The Church and Children in a Changing World

A Doctor of Ministry Course at the United Nations

The Presbyterian United Nations Office and Columbia Theological Seminary
January 11-22, 2010, New York City

Every two years, the Presbyterian United Nations Office and Columbia Theological Seminary hold a credited January term Doctor of Ministry Course on a topic of increasing importance for the world and faith communities. We are pleased to announce that the January 2010 course (HD774) will examine “The Church and Children in a Changing World.” The course will be held January 11-22, 2010, at the Presbyterian United Nations Office in New York.

The course theme for 2010 emerges from the reality that children will inherit a world which presents increasingly complex challenges. As the world undergoes dramatic and rapid change in all areas of life, no group of people is more affected than children. The two-week January course will encourage students to explore the role that an understanding of Christian ministry can play in the creation of a world which nurtures children.

Course information

Topics of study for the 2010 course include:

  • Children’s Rights in International Law
  • The United Nations Millennium Development Goals
  • Children and Globalization
  • Children in Armed Conflict
  • Child Refugees and Displacement

During the two-week course at the United Nations, students will learn about the impact of global changes on children, developing theological lenses through which to better examine the experiences of some of the world’s most vulnerable citizens. Through conversations with each other and members of the U.N. and faith communities, students will be introduced to efforts by the international community and the church to address the problems faced by children.

In addition to class time spent with external speakers and facilitators, students will analyze a country case study and present their reflections on one of the course themes. A course syllabus with detailed information on readings and assignments will be circulated prior to the beginning of the course.

Course leadership

The January Term course at the United Nations is coordinated by Columbia Theological Seminary and the Presbyterian United Nations Office. Mark Douglas, associate professor of Christian ethics at Columbia Theological Seminary, will lead the course, with support from Presbyterian United Nations Office staff. Members of the United Nations community including diplomats, non-governmental organization representatives and U.N. agency representatives will offer briefings throughout the course. In addition, the course will provide space for significant contributions from the ecumenical and faith-based community at the United Nations.

For information about the course and registration, contact the Presbyterian United Nations Office at (212) 697-4568 or by email. You may also contact Professor Mark Douglas directly.
