Advent: The Shepherds

Purchase the unit, consisting of the seven Workshops below, for $99.95. Bundle three to five units, and the cost drops to $84.95 per unit. Bundle six or more units, and the cost drops to $74.95 per unit. Units must be bundled at the time of purchase; this is not a cumulative discount. Individual workshops are $16.95 each.

The children will have the opportunity to:

  • Experience the story of the nativity through the eyes of the shepherds.
  • Consider the reasons that Jesus' birth was announced to poor and lowly people rather than rich and powerful people.
  • Create ornaments to help them pass on the good news of the Savior's birth.
  • Think about ways they can be faithful and responsive to the good news.

The Audiovisual Workshop explores Luke 2:8-20 through audiovisual media that is heard, viewed or made. Objectives of the workshop:

The children will have the opportunity to:

  • Know where to find in the Bible the story of Jesus' birth and the announcement to the shepherds.
  • Watch a video depicting the birth of Jesus, paying particular attention to the role of the shepherds, lowly people working in the fields guarding flocks, who were obedient to the Word of God announced by the angels.
  • Reflect on the birth of Jesus in a journal.

The Computer Workshop explores Luke 2:8-20 using computers. Sometimes computers are used to tell the story, and sometimes they are used to respond to it. Objectives of the workshop:

The children will have the opportunity to:

  • Hear the story of the shepherds at the birth of Jesus.
  • Explore the story of Jesus' birth using computer software.
  • Reflect in a journal and write a poem about who the shepherds were and what their amazing experience might have been like.

The Drama/Storytelling Workshop explores Luke 2:8-20 by retelling the story in ways that help children remember it. Objectives of the workshop:

The children will have the opportunity to:

  • Hear the story of the shepherds at Jesus' birth.
  • Describe a shepherd.
  • Be able to retell the story of Jesus' birth.

The Games and Puzzles Workshop explores Luke 2:8-20 by having children play biblically related games or puzzles. Objectives of the workshop:

The children will have the opportunity to:

  • Find Luke 2:8-20 in their Bibles.
  • Tell and talk about the story of the shepherds and their role in telling the good news.
  • Play a game.

The Music and Worship Workshop explores Luke 2:8-20 through music and makes the connection to worship in PC(USA) congregations. Objectives of the workshop:

The children will have the opportunity to:

  • Sing the story of the shepherds.
  • Experience music as a way to express our gratitude for the gift of Jesus.
  • Play a rhythm instrument or clap a steady beat.

The Bonus: Discovery Workshop explores Luke 2:8-20 by helping children imagine a day in the life of a shepherd. Objectives of the workshop:

The children will have the opportunity to:

  • Hear the story of Jesus' birth.
  • Learn about a shepherd's life.
  • Make bread ( optional ).
