Unit 1: Call to Freedom and Obedience

God calls Moses to lead God’s people to freedom. In response to this freedom, God calls God’s people to live obedient lives. The goal of Unit 1 is to introduce students to Moses’ response to God’s call and to the Ten Commandments, God’s instruction for our lives.

Session 1. Moses is Born
Exodus 2:1–10

Main Idea: Moses is born and grows up in Pharaoh's household.

Something to Remember: Exodus 2:10
When the child grew up, [his mother] brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and she took him as her son.  She named him Moses, "because," she said, "I drew him out of the water."

Session 2. God Calls Moses
Exodus 3:1–15

Main Idea: God calls Moses to lead God’s people out of slavery in Egypt. God spoke to Moses out of a bush that blazed with fire but did not burn up.

Something to Remember: Belonging to God: A First Catechism
Q. 17. How did God keep this covenant?
A.
God led Israel out of slavery in Egypt, gave them the Ten Commandments through Moses, and brought them into the land that God had promised.
Exodus 3:15
God also said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you’: This is my name forever, and this my title for all generations.”

Session 3. Let My People Go
Exodus 7–11:10

Main Idea: God tells Moses and his brother Aaron what to say and do to ensure that Pharaoh will let God’s people leave Egypt.

Something to Remember: Exodus 11:9–10
The Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh will not listen to you, in order that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.” Moses and Aaron performed all these wonders before Pharaoh; but the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the people of Israel go out of his land.

Session 4. Commandments — Relationship with God
Exodus 20:1–11

Main Idea: God’s call includes rules to live by. The first four commandments tell us how we are to relate to God.

Something to Remember: Belonging to God: A First Catechism
Q. 18. What are the Ten Commandments?
A.
The Ten Commandments are the law of God. When God gave them to Moses, God said, I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery:
(1) You shall have no other gods before me.
(2) You shall not make for yourself an idol.
(3) You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God.
(4) Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.
(5) Honor your father and your mother.
(6) You shall not murder.
(7) You shall not commit adultery.
(8) You shall not steal.
(9) You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
(10) You shall not covet what is your neighbor’s.
Q. 19. What is the main point of these commandments?
A.
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, and strength; and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Session 5. Commandments — Relationship with Others
Exodus 20:12–17

Main Idea: God’s call includes rules to live by. The last six commandments tell us how we are to relate to one another.

Unit 2: Call to Hope

During difficult times, God’s people call on God and God gives them hope. The goal of Unit 2 is to present stories of God’s call to hope.

Session 5. Call of Deborah
Judges 4—5:31

Main Idea: Deborah is chosen by God to lead the Israelites to overcome their oppressors, but it is another woman, Jael, who guarantees victory.

Something to Remember: Judges 4:4
At that time Deborah, a prophetess, wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel.

Session 6. Call of Hannah and Samuel
1 Samuel 1–3

Main Idea: Hannah yearns for a child and Samuel is born to her. She thanks God for this gift by dedicating Samuel’s life to the Lord.

Something to Remember: 1 Samuel 1:27–28
“For this child I prayed; and the Lord has granted me the petition that I made to him. Therefore I have lent him to the Lord; as long as he lives, he is given to the Lord.” She left him there for the Lord.

Session 7. Call of Elijah
1 Kings 17

Main Idea: During a time of great drought, God cares for Elijah. Then, God calls Elijah to care for a widow and her son.

Something to Remember: 1 Kings 17:24
So the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth.”

Session 8. Call of Elisha
2 Kings 2:1–15

Main Idea: Elijah’s spirit is passed to Elisha and Elisha continues God’s work.

Something to Remember: 2 Kings 2:15
When the company of prophets who were at Jericho saw him at a distance, they declared, “The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha.” They came to meet him and bowed to the ground before him.

Unit 3: Call to Leadership

The goal of Unit 3 is to introduce students to two major prophets. How are Jeremiah and Isaiah called by God? How do they proclaim God’s message to God’s people?

Session 9. Jeremiah’s Call
Jeremiah 1:4–10

Main Idea: Jeremiah thinks he is too young to be a prophet but God knows otherwise and calls him anyway.

Something to Remember: Jeremiah 1:6–8
Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy.” But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am only a boy’; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you, Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord.”

Session 10. Jeremiah’s Call to the People (I Am the Potter)
Jeremiah 18:1–12

Main Idea: Jeremiah watches a potter at work. God tells Jeremiah that God can rework Israel just as easily as the potter can rework clay on the potter’s wheel.

Something to Remember: Jeremiah 18:5–6
Then the word of the Lord came to me: Can I not do with you, O house of Israel, just as this potter has done? says the Lord. Just like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.

Session 11. Isaiah’s Call
Isaiah 6:1–13

Main Idea: Isaiah sees the splendor of the Lord and is called to deliver a message of judgment.

Something to Remember: Isaiah 6:6–8
Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: “Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.” Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I; send me!”

Session 12. Isaiah’s Call to the People (Make Straight the Paths)
Isaiah 40:1–5

Main Idea: Isaiah speaks God’s message of consolation to God’s people. The time of their exile will end.

Something to Remember: Isaiah 40:3
