The children will have the opportunity to:
- Hear the story of Jesus’ childhood and Jesus at the temple.
- Make a booklet showing how Jesus grew in faith and how they grow in faith.
- Make a diorama of Mary and Joseph looking for Jesus when he was in the temple.
The Audiovisual Workshop explores 2:41–52 through audiovisual media that is heard, viewed or made. Objectives of the workshop:
The children will have the opportunity to:
- Hear and think about the story of Jesus as a boy in the temple.
- Explore Jerusalem via National Geographic’s Secrets of Jerusalem’s Holiest Sites DVD.
The Computer Workshop explores Luke 2:41–52 using computers. Sometimes computers are used to tell the story and sometimes they are used to respond to it. Objectives of the workshop:
The children will have the opportunity to:
- Use Cal and Marty’s Scripture Memory Game software to memorize a verse of Scripture.
- Explore what the temple looked like in Jesus’ time.
- Use Let’s Talk software to discuss ideas about the story.
- Create an “instant messaging” conversation.
The Drama/Storytelling Workshop explores Luke 2:41–52 by retelling the story in ways that help children remember it. Objectives of the workshop:
The children will have the opportunity to:
- Examine a diagram and illustration of the temple in Jesus’ day and create a three-dimensional layout of the temple’s interior.
- Have a dramatic experience as they journey to Jerusalem and sit in the temple contemplating and discussing questions that Jesus may have had.
The Games and Puzzles Workshop explores Luke 2:41–52 by having children play biblically related games or puzzles. Objectives of the workshop:
The children will have the opportunity to:
- Play a game (“I’m going to the temple, and I’m bringing...”) that helps the children think about Jesus’ boyhood.
- Play a game (“I’m at the temple and I’m...”) that helps the children think about what happens in a place of worship.
- Hear the story of Jesus’ trip to the temple in Jerusalem as a young boy and imagine the scenes that take place.
- Play “Where’s Jesus?” by exploring four scenes from Jesus’ boyhood and searching for clues.
The Music and Worship Workshop explores Luke 2:41–52 through music and makes the connection to worship in PC(USA) congregations. Objectives of the workshop:
The children will have the opportunity to:
- Hear the story of Jesus as a boy in the temple.
- Learn two songs about worship: “Praise God, Praise God” and “I Was Glad When They Said” and sing them together in a round.
- Make travel pennants to carry with them on the journey to the sanctuary.
- Discuss why we go to worship and why we praise God.
The Bonus: Discovery Workshop explores Luke 2:41–52 with activities that help children learn about what it means to be a child of God. Objectives of the workshop:
The children will have the opportunity to:
- Play a game of “Twenty Questions, Church Edition.”
- Hear and discuss the story of Jesus as a boy in the temple.
- Make a catechism quilt square.
- Learn about Belonging to God: A First Catechism with a journal to share.
- Ask questions of a leader from their church.
