Keep It Simple and Sacred: Alternatives for Advent and Christmas
by Beth Walden-Fisher
Advent and Christmas are celebrations of the incarnation of Jesus Christ. They mark the movement in history when the holy broke through into the mundane world. With little more than a star, a burst of song and the visit of some shepherds, the Messiah arrives in the world. It was that simple and sacred. Now, Christmas has become a time for consumerism and consumption. Every year it is a race to see who can do Christmas bigger and better. But where is the reason for this celebration? This study will look at the traditions for celebrating Advent and Christmas and their origins and offer alternatives that bring the simplicity and sacredness of the season back to the forefront of our minds.
