Unit 1: Introduction to the Course

This unit introduces the students to the Old Testament (also referred to Hebrew Scripture) by reviewing what the students already know from prior classes or experience. The unit also reviews the major persons, places, and events of Hebrew Scripture.

Unit 2: Creating Faithfulness

This unit begins at the beginning, looking at the primeval stories in Genesis that were the foundation of Abraham and Sarah's faith. The students will compare the two creation stories, and review the remaining stories in the first eleven chapters of Genesis, including Adam and Eve, Noah, and the Tower of Babel.

Unit 3: A Faithful Family

This unit begins the history of the people of God with the story of Abraham and Sarah. The unit continues through the book of Genesis focusing on Isaac, and Jacob and Esau. The unit ends with the story of Joseph and how the people of God ended up in Egypt.

Unit 4: A Faithful God

This unit focuses on the story of the exodus of the Hebrew people from Egypt, beginning with Moses' call. The unit traces the journey of the people through the wilderness to the Promised Land. It introduces the students to Joshua and the conquest of Canaan. The unit also tells the story of Ruth, tying this unit to the story of King David.

Unit 5: Judges and Kings

This unit introduces the students to the time of judges and kings. The first session focuses on the twelve judges of Israel, and sets the scene for Samuel and the people's desire for a king. The following sessions focus on the rise of the kings from Saul to Solomon.

Unit 6: Special Writings

This unit takes a break from the history of the Hebrew people to focus on special writings found in Hebrew Scripture; Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job. The students learn about the different types of Psalms and the variety of wisdom literature found in Scripture.

Unit 7: A Divided Kingdom

This unit begins with a review session about the rulers of Israel, drawing the students back to the history. The students also learn about the division into a Northern (Israel) and Southern (Judah) Kingdom. They will also be introduced to the prophets of the time leading up to the fall of Jerusalem. Special attention is given to the prophets Elijah, Elisha, Amos, Isaiah, and Jeremiah.

Unit 8: To Babylon and Back Again

This unit recounts the exile to Babylon and the return to Israel. This brief unit focuses on Ezekiel as the spokesperson for God to those in exile. A look at the books of Ezra and Nehemiah concludes the history of the Israelites as recorded in Scripture with the restoration of Jerusalem.

Unit 9: Review

This unit reviews the entire survey course. It also includes optional sessions for Christmas and Easter, which focus on how Hebrew Scripture is connected to the story of Jesus' birth, death, and resurrection.
