Excerpt:
Christians have been confessing from the beginning, voicing creeds. It’s how the term “creed” originated: credo, I believe. We say it out loud, in public, in what or in whom we place our final trust. This is not just antique language and ancient ideas. Any time you encounter what the church teaches, you must ask yourself: Do I believe that? Another question is: What does it matter? What’s at stake in our believing, for ourselves and for the world?

The Apostles’ Creed is the worshipful articulation of the church’s trust in the particular God who calls it into being and whose story is told in the church’s Scripture. In uttering the creed, the believer enters the great story of God’s way with the world. Learn more about this book and the others in the I Believe series.

Witherspoon Press, a publishing imprint of Congregational Ministries Publishing, was established in 1997 to help further the mission of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) by providing resources that nurture, affirm, challenge and celebrate the human spirit.

We take our name from John Witherspoon, one of the founders of the Presbyterian Church in America and moderator of its first General Assembly in 1789. In addition to his leadership in the Presbyterian Church, Witherspoon was also president of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), a member of the New Jersey state legislature and the Continental Congress and the only clergy to sign the Declaration of Independence.

Like John Witherspoon, everything we do remains grounded in the wonderfully rich Presbyterian and Reformed tradition that has shaped so much of the life of our culture.

Witherspoon Press publishes a variety of books, including the revised and enlarged edition of Dr. Gayraud Wilmore's seminal work, Black and Presbyterian: The Heritage and the Hope, and William Chapman's four books on his interpretation of the Book of Order.

Witherspoon Press is in the process of publishing a series of resources to help congregations explore the six Great Ends of the Church.

Witherspoon Press publishes books for persons of every age that address topics of the Reformed faith and theology, congregational life and worship, mission, service and stewardship.
