Cover: Alive to God in Jesus Christ by Joseph D. SmallAlive to God in Jesus Christ

by Joseph D. Small, Director, Theology Worship and Education

At baptism, persons declare that a human being named Jesus, who lived in a particular time and place, is God’s anointed one, the very presence of God among us. As the Christ, this Jesus is Lord of time and space, Savior of the world. But there is more. Christians declare “Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior.”

Make this Lenten season a time of renewed faith for your congregation. Alive to God in Jesus Christ includes forty devotional readings and a five-session study guide for groups of any size.

Praise for Alive to God from Moderator Bruce Reyes-Chow

218th General Assembly Moderator Bruce Reyes-ChowWhat a rich gift we are given this Lenten season from Joe Small, director, Theology Worship and Education. Alive to God in Jesus Christ not only presents an accessible way to nurture our intellectual and spiritual understanding of Jesus Christ, but we are also challenged to explore ways that our faith is lived out in our lives and in the world. Dr. Small brings to life the depth and breadth of our Reformed understanding of Jesus Christ, while touching upon deep social and personal places where God’s healing and life-giving presence is yearned for. Whether Dr. Small’s Lenten devotional is used as a personal devotional or congregational study guide, I would recommend that it be part of any spiritual discipline in preparation for Resurrection Day. What a gift to the church!

Witherspoon Press, a publishing imprint of Congregational Ministries Publishing, was established in 1997 to help further the mission of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) by providing resources that nurture, affirm, challenge and celebrate the human spirit.

We take our name from John Witherspoon, one of the founders of the Presbyterian Church in America and moderator of its first General Assembly in 1789. In addition to his leadership in the Presbyterian Church, Witherspoon was also president of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), a member of the New Jersey state legislature and the Continental Congress and the only clergy to sign the Declaration of Independence.

Like John Witherspoon, everything we do remains grounded in the wonderfully rich Presbyterian and Reformed tradition that has shaped so much of the life of our culture.

Witherspoon Press publishes a variety of books, including the revised and enlarged edition of Dr. Gayraud Wilmore's seminal work, Black and Presbyterian: The Heritage and the Hope, and William Chapman's four books on his interpretation of the Book of Order.

Witherspoon Press is in the process of publishing a series of resources to help congregations explore the six Great Ends of the Church.

Witherspoon Press publishes books for persons of every age that address topics of the Reformed faith and theology, congregational life and worship, mission, service and stewardship.
