This book contains fifty-two meditations based on actual sermons that Rev. Curran preached in his congregation. Each meditation not only introduces readers to the basic beliefs of the Presbyterian Church, but it guides them in their quest to live out those beliefs in daily life.
These weekly meditations reflect on the meanings of catechism questions found in Belonging to God: A First Catechism, the Presbyterian catechism for children. In choosing the children's version as subject matter for adult processing, Curran shows us the complexity behind even seemingly simple statements regarding the Presbyterian faith. With wisdom and humor, the Rev. Curran skillfully lifts up the theological implications for daily life in each mediation.
The Rev. Curran reflects on what sparked the idea for this book, "What we believe about God and the world is very important. Yet, I have found that even experienced elders and long-time church members have trouble articulating the basics of our Reformed faith. These meditations are designed to help Presbyterians in the pew deepen their understanding of the essential tenets of their faith as well as broaden their spiritual awareness of God's gracious love for the world."
The Rev. Curran was ordained to the ministry of Word and Sacrament in 1981 and is a graduate or Princeton Seminary and Columbia Seminary. He has served churches in Pennsylvania, Florida and Virginia. He has also served 12 years as a chaplain in the Army Reserve. He was instrumental in founding a Habitat for Humanity affiliate in western Pennsylvania and initiating an ecumenical outreach ministry in Suffolk, VA. He has had numerous devotions published in The Upper Room, a daily devotional guide.
