Women of Faith Award winners named

3 honored for ‘visionary work’ in transforming church and
society

by Evan Silverstein
Presbyterian News Service

LOUISVILLE - Two ministers and a laywoman will be honored for their "visionary work in transforming the church and society" as recipients of the 2008 Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Women of Faith Awards.

The three are the Rev. Magdalena I. García, pastor of Ravenswood Presbyterian Church, a multicultural and bilingual congregation in Chicago; the Rev. Ann L. Hayman of Santa Monica, Calif., founder of the Mary Magdalene Project, a program that provides alternatives to women involved in street prostitution; and Theodora (Thea) Jackson of Brewster, N.Y., founder of the Jamaica Service Project in Queens, N.Y., a national model for developing comprehensive and coordinated systems of services for the aging. Celebrate the Gifts of Women

Celebrating the Young Women Within

Celebrate the Gifts of Women Sunday is set aside to honor women who contribute their gifts and talents to the church and community. In 2007, we celebrated young women who are, and have potential to be, present leaders as well as future leaders in the church. In 2008, we continue the celebration of young women within our church, as well as honoring the “inner young woman” dwelling inside gracefully aging women, who have within them the divine spark of vitality. We invite women of all ages to gather into the community of faithful women who provide leadership and service.

As an African American, I am a minority, yet people of color make up two-thirds of the world’s population. As a woman in the United States, I am a member of the majority (51 percent) in terms of population but my gender continues to be denied equal pay while men accrue benefits, perks and promotions in our patriarchal society.  Keep reading.

"She said to him, ‘Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into the world.” (John 11:27)

Many of us are familiar with Jesus’ powerful words, “I am the resurrection and the life.  Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die” (John 11:25-26). What we usually don’t hear or remember is the question following that statement and the response. Keep reading.
