Angola
Angola is one of Africa’s major oil producers, but it is also one of the world’s poorest countries. The PC(USA)’s relationships in Portuguese-speaking Angola are relatively recent because of the 27-year period of civil war after the country gained independence from Portugal in 1975. A formal cease-fire was signed in 2002. The PC(USA)’s partner church, the Presbyterian Church of Angola, has seven congregations in the Luanda area, with about 20,000 members, in the southern part of the country. Some Angolans left to go to Congo during the hostilities, and their return has had both positive and negative aspects.
The PC(USA), along with the Baptist Church, has assisted with a meeting of pastors for pastoral leadership. The general secretary of the All African Conference of Church (AACC), an Angolan, has come to the United States as a particpant in the PC(USA)’s International Peacemakers program. |
