Education
Amity Teachers Support
The Amity Foundation, initiated by Chinese Christians, has asked U.S. churches to support the Teachers Project by sending teachers of English to teach in colleges and institutions that cannot afford to hire foreign teachers. Presbyterians and others are invited as Christians to relate to the Christian community there, though not to do mission work. The sending churches, through the National Council of Churches’ China Program, financially support them. The support of one teacher per year is about $9,000. |

Hangzhou Seminary Scholarship
Recent visitors to this seminary were shocked when they saw the inadequate facilities and living areas for Chinese theological students in Hangzhou. Sometimes as many as 10 students are living in a room little bigger than 8' x 10'. The capital needs for building and rehabilitation of Hangzhou are critical at the present time. More living and study space would be a tremendous help to the witness of this seminary. |

China New Church Building
The church in China continues to grow faster than it can keep up with. There is a great need for help with construction of key church buildings. The PC(USA) is seeking funds to help with facilities that are located in strategic parts of cities to serve for both worship and the training of lay leadership for all congregations in the surrounding area. As the local churches do their part, the PC(USA) will add funds to help complete their buildings. |

Kyle Fryling — Amity Teacher
Kyle Fryling was appointed in June 2006 to serve as an English teacher with the Amity Foundation in China, where he serves at Nanning Junior Teachers College in Longzhou. He teaches oral English classes to English majors who themselves will become English teachers. When their three years of college are complete, many will return to their poor rural villages and teach middle-school students. In China, English is very important and often required for admission into college. Students coming from poor areas tend to get poorer instruction in English than their urban counterparts, which reduces their chance of going to college and their opportunities. The Amity Foundation’s help with the English education of poor, rural students is one way Amity helps break the cycles of poverty in China. |
