Extra Commitment Opportunities

There is a channel through which gifts can be designated for specific items that support the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)'s work around the world. These are called Extra Commitment Opportunities (ECOs). You can give directly to an ECO account online or by mailing your check designating the name and account number of the particular item you have chosen to:

Children and Youth

Ministry to Handicapped Children

The Amity Foundation supports courses for teachers of deaf children in Jiangsu and Beijing and provides assistance to deaf children. It is estimated that there are about 740,000 children in China with hearing impairments.

Church Development in China

Development

Amity Rural Development Projects

This project will help the economically underdeveloped area of Jiangsu Province to improve its fish production by supporting a model collective that uses local resources. It also assists less privileged farmers and minority people by helping with the construction of classroom buildings, dormitories, and an in-patient clinic.

Education

Amity Teachers Support

The Amity Foundation, initiated by Chinese Christians, has asked U.S. churches to support the Teachers Project by sending teachers of English to teach in colleges and institutions that cannot afford to hire foreign teachers. Presbyterians and others are invited as Christians to relate to the Christian community there, though not to do mission work. The sending churches, through the National Council of Churches’ China Program, financially support them. The support of one teacher per year is about $9,000.

Books for Chinese Seminary Graduates

Seminary graduates have very limited book resources when they enter the ministry. This project intends to provide a single volume of the Dictionary of Christianity and a set of Bible commentary.

Hangzhou Seminary

This seminary has inadequate facilities and living areas for Chinese theological students in Hangzhou. Sometimes as many as 10 students are living in a room little bigger than 8' x 10'. The capital needs for building and rehabilitation of Hangzhou are critical. More living and study space will be a tremendous help to the witness of this seminary.

The 18 theological seminaries in China are poorly equipped with theological books. There is a very urgent need to strengthen their libraries.

Colleges and institutes for native speakers of Chinese or Korean in northeastern China often cannot afford to support U.S. teachers of English and other fields of study. This project provides support for such teachers.

There are 171 theological seminaries and 20 Bible schools related to the China Christian Council. These schools are in critical need of books. No basic reference books are available. These schools are training church leaders in China.

Evangelism

China New Church Building

The church in China continues to grow faster than it can keep up with. There is a great need for help with construction of key church buildings. The PC(USA) is seeking funds to help with facilities that are located in strategic parts of cities to serve for both worship and the training of lay leadership for all congregations in the surrounding area. As the local churches do their part, the PC(USA) will add funds to help complete their buildings.

  Frontier Mission: Emerging Work With Minority Peoples

The church in China is seeking to reach out to the minority peoples of China. World Mission and the Presbyterian Frontier Fellowship are working on ways to come alongside them in this effort. The Rev. Ho and Min Young Ban — Professor of Computer Science

Ho Ban teaches computer science and manages the Hi Tech Vocational School in Shenyang and also serves at the Dental Technical Institute. He is an ordained PC(USA) minister. Min Young provides ministry from their home.

  The Rev. Judy Chan — Communications Specialist

Seconded to the Hong Kong Christian Council, Judy Chan serves as the Council’s executive secretary for communications. Her responsibilities include an ecumenical radio broadcasting ministry, English publications, and being a liaison with international churches. She is an ordained PC(USA) minister.

  Brett and Shelly Faucett — Regional Consultant for Health and HIV/AIDS, India/Thailand/China

Brett and Shelly Faucett are newly appointed regional consultants for health and HIV/AIDS in South Asia, based in Chiang Mai. Most recently Brett, a registered nurse, was on the staff of Hoag Presbyterian Hospital in Newport Beach, Calif. Brett and Shelly served for two years with the Peace Corps in Moldova. Shelly has had special training in teaching English as a second language and has worked as a literacy specialist as well as an ESL teacher with the Peace Corps.

  Juno Lee — Teacher, Dental Technology

Juno Lee serves at the Hi Tech Vocational School in Shenyang, where he teaches dental technology. His ministry provides training for young adults lacking funds for higher education so they can begin to earn a decent living.

Donald and Wei Hong Snow — Regional Liaisons and Faculty/Librarian

Don Snow teaches in the English Department of Nanjing University, one of China’s top universities and an institution the Presbyterian Church had a hand in founding over a century ago. Wei Hong serves as a volunteer at the library of Nanjing Union Theological Seminary. Both Don and Wei Hong began mission service in China in the early 1990s and serve the PC(USA) as regional liaisons for China.

The Hi-Tech Vocational School trains minority Chinese-Korean students in vocational skills and knowledge.
