Dominican Republic Programs and Projects

Hunger

In 2007 the Presbyterian Hunger Program made the following grants:

BRA Dominicana $5,000
Food relief and medical services to 1,700 HIV sufferers in Dominican sugar cane bateyes.

Grupo de Pastores Interdenominacionales Generacion  de Ingresos para Mujeres Negras Marginadas de  los Bateyes $8,000
Income-generating activities for Haitian women living in Dominican bateyes.
 
Grupo de Pastores Interdenominacionales Proyecto  Agricola en Zonas Cañeras de los Bateye  $10,000
Establishing gardening plots on fallow land in Dominican bateyes for poor Haitian workers.  

Grupo de Pastores Interdenominacionales Levantando la Dignidad Negra de los Haitianos de los Bateyes $10,000

Regularizing the legal status of children born in the Dominican Republic of Haitian parents.
             
 
 

Self-Development

In 2007 the PC(USA) Self-Development of People program made the following grants:

Batey Relief Alliance (BRA) and Movement of Haitian-Dominican Women (MUDHA)   $79,294
The Batey Relief Alliance (BRA) and the Movement of Haitian-Dominican Women (MUDHA) joined together to construct clean water systems in several bateys relative to their respective work. Meeting together for months, BRA and MUDHA developed and presented a thorough plan for constructing water systems in 11 bateys throughout the central and eastern regions of the Dominican Republic. The systems would provide clean water to approximately 8,500 people. The project also provided for administration and maintenance of the systems and educational opportunities dealing with the value and health benefits of clean water.

CE-MUJER     $21,000
CE-MUJER is an organization that provides leadership and technical training to Women’s Federations and Associations throughout the Dominican Republic. This project is to support technical training related to other projects the International Task Force has approved for funding and presented in separate précis.

Farmer Women Federation of San Rafael del Yuma (FEMUCABAYU)    $19,000

Federation of Community organizations of Imbert, Luperon and Altamira    $18,923
The project is the establishment of a pig farming co-op, which envisions participation by at least 60 families. Following the Heifer Project model, each family will be responsible for a pregnant sow, which will (in a few months) produce a litter of piglets, which will provide both food (pork, bacon) for the families, and a cash crop (leftover piglets), which will be sold.  Part of the proceeds will be reinvested in the co-op.  

Regional Federation of Peasants, Farmers, Women and Micro Business Organizations   $19,800
The project is to improve the nutrition of children in rural low-income families in Las Matas de Farfan municipality by producing milk. The project will establish milk micro businesses operated/managed by the families in the community

Women Association (AMUTEC)   $46,027.26

Women Federation Marcelina de los Santos (FEMUSASA)    $20,000
The project is a block-making factory in the community of Guerra. The funds are to be used to buy materials (sand, gravel, concrete, etc.) with which to make the blocks (like cinder blocks) and a truck to be used in delivery of the blocks.

Women Federation Marcelina de los Santos, FEMUMASA   $15,000
The project is a cheese factory in a rural, poor community of the Dominican Republic. Specifically, the project will provide a more adequate work space for the women employed in the factory and purchase much needed materials and equipment to make the factory more viable.

Women Federation of Guerra (FEMUGUE)   $20,000
The project is a block-making factory in the community of Guerra. The funds are to be used to buy materials (sand, gravel, concrete, molds, etc.) with which to make the blocks (like cinder blocks) and a truck to be used in delivery of blocks.

Women Federation of Guerra (FEMUGUE)   $20,000
The project is to enlarge a warehouse. This Association is a part of the Federation, as the baker in Guerra, which was previously funded

Women Federation Secundina de los Reyes   $18,500
The project is a revolving line of credit and training program for a women’s federation of 20 community associations (totaling approximately 900 women) in the rural areas of the Hato Mayor Municipality.  The rotating funds are a source of credit for women in the federation to start and improve small businesses, repair houses, purchase school supplies for their children, acquire and care for animals, finance health treatments, etc.  The training component is to provide leadership skills to the women, empower them to make better decisions in their communities and increase their self-esteem.

Young group "Nueva Vision"    $6,850
The project is the educational and technical training of youths in order to decrease early pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases as well as to prepare them to successfully establish a work place and operate a business.
