Extra Commitment Opportunities

There is a channel through which gifts can be designated for specific items that support the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)'s work around the world. These are called Extra Commitment Opportunities (ECOs). You can give directly to an ECO account online or by mailing your check designating the name and account number of the particular item you have chosen to:

AFRAM Plains Development, Ghana PCG

More than 100,000 displaced people from the Volta Dam region are desperately in need of the most basic kind of support. Gifts to this program will help provide medical care, nutrition, safe water and education to these displaced persons.

Akrofi Christaller Memorial Institute in Ghana

Akrofi Christaller Memorial Institute is a postgraduate research and training center in the town of Akropong. The focus of the studies is the study of the forms and traditions of African Christian life and thought emerging as a distinctive strand of non-Western Christianity with the potential of contributing to world Christianity.

Presbyterian Women's Training College PCG

The Presbyterian Women's Training College in Aburi, Ghana, has a long history of service to the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) and to the nation. It has prepared women for all types of leadership and service, especially in congregations. Because of its location and climate the college is increasingly involved in hosting conferences and retreats. The college is in need of basic educational, medical, housekeeping and office supplies.

Trinity Theological College, Ghana

Trinity trains most of the pastors for all the Protestant churches in Ghana. At present there are 70 students, both men and women, and 13 faculty members, full-time and part-time, all of whom are African. The college is making great strides in increasing self-support projects.

Evangelism

International Evangelism Projects

Contributions to this ECO enable the Office of International Evangelism (OIE) to respond positively to various requests for evangelistic ministry support received from partners throughout the world. Recent gifts have allowed OIE to support church construction projects in Ghana and Nigeria along with several Bible translation and distribution projects. Gifts to this project may also assist with related project expenses such as mission personnel, travel and administrative support.

  Northern Outreach Program (PFF — Presbyterian Frontier Fellowship)

The Presbyterian Church of Ghana started the Northern Outreach Program in 1989 as an outreach to the many non-evangelized people from northern Ghana who had migrated to the south. Today over 3,000 of these former Northerners worship in 50 full-fledged congregations and 11 preaching points. Most are new converts from traditional religions and come from a number of different ethnic groups. Worship and teaching is done in the language of the particular group. In addition to evangelism and church planting, other programs, such as job training and health education, are in place to meet physical and social needs.

Mission Personnel

Rev. Glen and Carol Hallead — Regional Liaison and YAV Site Coordinator

Glen and Carol Hallead coordinate the PC(USA) Young Adult Volunteers working with the Presbyterian Church of Ghana and the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana. This past year they supervised three volunteers about whom they say, “These are the young women of the future who see God doing amazing things and get excited enough to do something radically different from their friends.” Glen, , an ordained PC(USA) minister, also serves in the Accra Ridge Church, an international and interdenominational congregation.

Other Support

Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana, General

The Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Ghana has congregations, evangelistic programs, educational, medical and development institutions throughout the nation. Because of the general poverty of the nation, each of these programs can function only with outside contributions.

Ghana Young Adult Volunteer Program

Young adult volunteers serving in Ghana experience a year of developing Christian community through spiritual formation and volunteer service. Serving at several sites across Ghana, young adult volunteers live together in Christian community and serve neighborhood ministries. Gifts to this ECO will be used for programmatic site support or to directly support young adult volunteers through reimbursement of outstanding student loans, housing and food allowances, and/or a travel subsidy.

  Presbyterian Church of Ghana

The Presbyterian Church in Ghana was established 150 years ago. Since World War II it has been able to establish a pension fund for retired pastors, but that fund is not sufficient to care for spouses of pastors who have died. The church has asked the PC(USA) to help in any way it can to nourish this fund.

Regional Liaison for West Africa

Gifts to this ECO provide travel and operating expenses for the work of regional liaisons in supporting partner churches and programs, mission personnel, involvement of PC(USA) presbyteries and congregations, and  organizations and mission networks in the region, which includes Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.

Women's Work

Ghana Women’s Project

Gifts to the Ghana Women’s Project will help the Institute of Women in Religion and Culture in Accra. The Institute is the dream become reality of both Trinity Theological Seminary in Accra and the All Africa Circle of Concerned African Women Theologians. Support of this project was adopted by Women’s Ministries as a follow-up to the Decade of Churches in Solidarity with Women. Gifts will be used in two ways: to build Talitha ’Qumi Centre, which will house the Institute’s library, meeting room and office; and to provide for program events, such as local and regional Way-Forward Seminars and national and pan-African conferences on women’s issues.
