Aizawl Theological College

Aizawl, Mizoram

History: Aizawl Theological College (ATC) began in 1907 as a humble theological school to train native Christians for various ministries of the Church. The Reverend D. E. Jones, the first Welsh missionary in Mizoram, was instrumental in establishing this small theological school. It continued to survive during the difficult period of the First World War. Theologically trained Mizo were instrumental in running the school right from its beginning. Due to the Second World War, the theological school was closed and in 1951 was reopened as per the decision of the Mizoram Presbyterian Church Synod. In 1964, when the L.Th. course was granted affiliate by the Senate, the school was upgraded to the L.Th. level college. In 1971, it was again upgraded to the B.Th. level college by the Senate of Serampore College. In 1994, when the Reverend H. Remthanga was the Moderator of the Mizoram Presbyterian Church Synod, the B.D. studies program was introduced and the college became the B.D. level college. We are now planning to introduce M.Th. studies program in the fields of Christian Theology, Religions, and Missiology in 2002.

  Profile:

At present ATC offers B.Th., BCS, Dip. CS, and B.D. studies programs. Both the B.Th. and B.D. are degree courses under the Senate of Serampore College. There are more than 200 students registered this year, of whom 33 are B.Th. students, 120 are B.D. students, and the rest are BCS and Dip. CS students. Of the 200 students registered, 35 are women. The College now has 19 faculty members, including the Principal, Vice Principal, and Registrar. All have M.Th. degrees granted by the Serampore College Council. The Principal, Vice Principal, and Registrar have D.Th. degrees granted by the Serampore College Council.

Mission: The primary aim/objective of the College is to train young men and women for full-time ministries in the Church. The College also seeks to edify the Church society through its lay theological education program and other ministries. This, in general, the College endeavors to train people to become theologically mature and committed to Christian discipleship in the world.

Church Relationship: From its beginning, the ATC belongs to the Mizoram Presbyterian Church Synod. However, students and faculty have been drawn from various denominational backgrounds and as such the ATC has become known as an ecumenical institution.

Needs: The College has been seeking financial support from the PC(USA) for its building project known as Chapel-Library-Auditorium Complex which costs more than 166 lakhs. It is also seeking financial support for its women students of the College.
