History: |
Union Christian
College (UCC) was founded in 1921 as an adventure in ecumenical
cooperation and Christian service. The founders were convinced "that
the Christians of India today are called upon to shoulder their
humble share of the many tasks that confront the nation." From a
modest beginning with five teachers and sixty-four students, UCC
has grown to be one of the foremost institutions of higher learning
in South India. |

Profile: |
UCC is a residential
college which offers postgraduate studies in nine fields, in addition
to its undergraduate programs in the arts and sciences. Five of
the postgraduate departments are recognized as Research Centers
of Mahatma Gandhi University. The College has an institute of Information
Technology accredited by the Department of Electronics of the Government
of India. The Nodal agency, CHPCD, coordinates the international
connections and such centers as CCES, CAS and Folklore, offering
the following courses: Human Ecology, Wildlife Management, Archeology,
Folklore, Tribal Studies, Floriculture, and others. |

Mission: |
President Rajan Varughese
sees market forces integrating the world as never before, but, in
the process, "homogenizing cultures, marginalizing people and destroying
ecosystems." Colleges and universities, he says, must counter these
destructive trends with a commitment to "international, interdisciplinary
and curricular solidarity. We must follow a new vision of higher
education in keeping with our Christian values." |
