In 1930, a school
was started and named after missionary Henry Martyn to equip missionaries
for evangelical proselytizing. The Henry Martyn Institute of Islamic
Studies gave missionaries language skills and information about
Islam that would better prepare them to answer the objections to
Christianity that Muslims and Hindus would bring. Since 1986, the
institute has been functioning as an expression of the church's
ministry of reconciliation.
