History: |
The Myanmar
Institute of Theology (MIT) was founded in 1927 with four students.
Throughout its history, MIT has served as the highest institution
of theological education in Myanmar. Representatives of 23 ethnic
groups have received their training at MIT. Enrollment has increased
to 450 and the Alumni Association now has more than 1,000 members. |

Profile: |
MIT offers the Master
of Divinity, Master of Arts and Theological Studies and Bachelor
of Religious Education degree programs. Plans are underway to add
the Master of Theology Program in 2002. A three week "Summer Seminar
at MIT" which is aimed at seminarians,
church leaders and interested lay people from foreign countries.
It will focus on Christianity in the Buddhist context. English is
the medium of instruction. After the departure of international
missionaries in 1966, MIT has been staffed entirely by nationals.
There are 14 staff members teaching at present with seven professors
on study leave. |

Mission: |
The purpose of the Institute
is to equip men and women for the Christian ministry and service
in the world. MIT strives to provide a context in which students
acquire a theological education which is biblical and based on practical
experience. |

Needs: |
Due to limited facilities,
MIT has been able to accept only 114 students out of 223 applicants
this year. Phase III (1999-2000) of the current fund-raising campaign
calls for the building of a four-story multi-purpose Diamond Jubilee
building for $30,000 and a new women's hostel for $24,000. |

Church Relationship: |
MIT is affiliated
with the Myanmar Baptist Convention and serves Baptist, Presbyterian,
Anglican, Methodist, Lutheran and other Protestant groups. |
