History: |
Founded by the
Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren in 1919 as an independent higher
education institution for training Protestant ministers, the Faculty
was incorporated into Charles University in Prague in 1990 after
the fall of the communist regime. |

Profile: |
The Protestant Theological
Faculty (PTF) provides theological training at university level.
The standard course is a five-year program leading to a Master's
degree in theology. Many, though not all, graduates of this program
go on to serve as ministers in their respective churches. We also
offer two four-year programs leading to a Bachelor's degree: "The
Theology of Christian Traditions" and "Pastoral and Social Work."
It is also possible to study for a doctorate. In 1999-2000, the
PTF had about 460 students and some 20 teaching staff. |

Mission: |
(from the Statute of
the PTF): The basic mission of the PTF is to freely foster theological
research, to publish its results without restriction, and to educate
and train specialists both for ministerial activity in the churches
and in other areas of public life. The ecumenical nature of the
PTF enables the churches to freely adopt their own position with
regard to its activities. |

Church Relationship: |
As part of the
university, the PTF is a state institution, but it retains strong
informal links with its founder church, the Evangelical Church of
Czech Brethren. Approximately half the students are members of this
church; but, we also have students from other churches. |
