Protestant University of Congo

Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo

History: Launched in 1959 before the Congo's independence, the Protestant University of Congo has survived several crises due to the political problems of the Congo. It became a full university in 1963, but was nationalized in 1971, only to be reborn in 1990.

Profile: The Protestant University of Congo has three colleges (Business/Economics, Theology, and Law) which enroll 4,500 students. Its oldest college is Theology which enrolls about 300 students, thus assuring the high level of the pastorate and leadership in the Congolese church. Created by five overseas missions (American Baptist, British Baptist, Methodist, Disciples of Christ, and Presbyterian Church USA), this college trains pastors for all "communautes" of the Church of Christ in Congo. The faculty and board are all Congolese, but depend on overseas partners for support.

Mission: The objective of the Protestant University of Congo is to equip the Congo's future leaders with a university education steeped in the Christian faith. The University wishes to emphasize the dimension of Christian ethics with the aim of producing Christian leaders inspired to serve God and the nation in faith and in truth.

Needs: Funds toward the following: Student Scholarships [$320 for tuition and fees (for one academic year), $480 for housing (for one academic year), $1,020 for food (for one academic year), and $280 for textbooks (for one academic year)], $35 to purchase one book for the library, $25,000 for vehicle for visiting professors, $12,000 for equipment for Student Spouse School, $1,500 for student sports equipment, $5,000 for office equipment, $250 per year per office for office supplies for faculty offices.
