History: |
The American
Presbyterian Mission
was started in 1852 by Rev. Royal G. Wailder in Western Maharashtra.
In 1884, an epidemic of bubonic plague wiped out one third of the
population of Sangli, a city of 20,000 people and capital of native
state of Sangli. The sympathetic missionaries opened an orphanage
and provided food and shelter to 44 motherless children. This was
the beginning of Sangli Station which has now become one of the
larger stations of the mission.
A flourishing kindergarten with an attractive
garden and playground represented the Station's educational work.
Sixteen village primary schools and a Bible Training School to
train evangelistic workers were started.
The Sangli Industrial and Agricultural
School, the only institution of its kind in this area, began in
1888. Since then the school has grown rapidly under the able and
dynamic leadership of mission personnel who were its principals:
- Mr. John Jolly, Founder, 1891-1895
- Mr. Wilson, 1896-1914
- Mr. Harry Brown, 1914-1954
- The Reverend Robert Ramer, 1954-1960,
1965-1970, 1975-1984
- The Reverend Jack Seibert, 1960-1965,
1970-1975
- Mr. A. A. Mackasare, 1984-1991
- The Reverend D. S. Gosavi, 1991-1994
- Brig. (Retired) George Matthew, 1994-1997
Presently Mr. Sandip William Raut, a young
engineer, is Principal.
