Honduran Crisis Advisory
August 18 2009:
A coup by military and civilian sectors on June 28, 2009, forced President Manuel Zelaya into exile. Roberto Micheletti, the speaker of Congress, was sworn in as interim leader. The coup took place in the context of a power struggle over President Zelaya’s plans for constitutional change. Those plans had been rejected by the Supreme Court and the Congress.

"On the early hours of Sunday, June 28, the Honduran President Manuel Zelaya was about to organize a referendum judged as illegal by the Supreme Court was arrested by the army and transferred to Costa Rica. In the political crisis that resulted, and as supporters of Zelaya have mobilized themselves to ask for his return, citizens have seen their rights diminishing through restriction of movement, curfews, threats and arbitrary arrests.
The functioning of governmental entities has been irregular, affecting the delivery of public services. The instability impacted on the economic situation through the decreasing rate of importation and exportation, donors who have frozen sending of funds to the country, loss of income from tourism and impact on the agricultural sector as crops have been left unattended. Military troops have been mobilized throughout the country."

- Pray for continued dialogue at all levels of society on fundamental issues facing Honduras.
- Pray that Hondurans not resign themselves to the present situation, but rather persevere towards the re-establishment of the constitutional order.
- Pray for the free expression of opinions without threat of violence or arbitrary detention.
- Pray for Honduran families who have lost members to the violence or arbitrary detention, or that are divided by the crisis.
- Pray for the Honduran Presbyterian Church and for reconciliation among members of churches disagreeing about the crisis.
- Pray for people in rural communities who do not have enough to eat and in whose name so much is said and proclaimed.
- Pray for an international response that promotes dialogue, understanding and a peaceful resolution to this crisis.
- Pray for the many mission partnerships between the PC(USA) and churches and communities in Honduras.
