Hungary
Our mission partners in Hungary face very demanding challenges. Some major problems concern migrants, refugees and trafficking in women and children. Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) assistance is focused in overcoming the difficulties in welcoming and resettling strangers and refugees.
As in other formerly Communist countries seeking membership in the European Union, our Hungarian partners face the shifting conditions of transition to a market economy and western European structures. Rapid changes for them also are occurring in education, health care, environmental issues and relationships in society, government and politics.
They need our support in recovering from the impact of 50 years of Communism on their sense of mission, leadership, lay involvement, international connections and ecumenical cooperation. We also urge our partners to share insights into faith that they have gained and kept through years under Communist rule.
Hungary has a significant Roma (Gypsy) minority. We are encouraging our partners to function as a bridge between the Roma and the majority in their society. In this the PC(USA) closely cooperates with the Presbyterian Church of the Republic of Korea (PROK). The PC(USA) supports Christian witness and service in Hungary both through our partner churches and organizations and through our mission personnel and Young Adult Volunteers, who work closely with these bodies. |
