Extra Commitment Opportunities

There is a channel through which gifts can be designated for specific items that support the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)'s work around the world. These are called Extra Commitment Opportunities (ECOs). You can give directly to an ECO account online or by mailing your check designating the name and account number of the particular item you have chosen to:

Education

Development Associate for Interpretation and Support — NEST

This ECO will assist with logistical costs for a mission staff person assigned to the Near East School of Theology in Beirut to assist the Middle East office in developing and implementing a theological education strategy with the PC(USA)'s partners in the region.

Lebanese American University (formerly Beirut University College)

Tracing its roots in Beirut back to American Presbyterian missionaries in 1835, Lebanese American University is committed to academic excellence, student-centeredness, the advancement of scholarship, the education of the whole person and the formation of students as future leaders in a diverse world. Funds are needed for the updating of faculty and staff, student scholarship aid and library acquisitions.

Near East School of Theology (NEST)

NEST, an interdenominational Protestant theological seminary in Beirut, serves the Evangelical churches of the Middle East. In recent years it has also accepted English-speaking students from Africa and is able to accommodate international students who have a special interest in Biblical and Islamic studies in a Middle Eastern context.

Mission Personnel

Carol Dolezal-Ng — Development Associate for Interpretation/Support, NEST

Carol was appointed in January 2008 to this position with the Near East School of Theology (NEST) in Beirut, Lebanon. She works out of her home in California but travels to NEST regularly to confer with administrators, faculty and students. These meetings enable her to communicate NEST’s mission more effectively to supporters in the United States. Founded by the PC(USA) in the 19th century, NEST trains ministers for Protestant churches in the Middle East and Africa.

  Rev. Dr. Nuhad Tomeh — Regional Liaison for Syria, Lebanon, Kuwait and Iraq

Nuhad Tomeh serves with the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC) and as the PC(USA) regional liaison with Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and the Gulf. As an associate general secretary of the MECC, he is in charge of the Iraq relief and rehabilitation program, which is part of the ecumenical relief services of the MECC.

Other Support

Regional Liaison for Syria, Lebanon and Iraq — Expenses

Funds will be used for operating, travel and administrative expenses for the work of regional liaisons in helping implement agreed-upon programs with partner churches and institutions; supporting PC(USA) congregations and presbyteries in direct mission involvement with partners; and giving practical, pastoral and culture/language transition support to other PC(USA) mission personnel serving in the region.
