Education
Presbyterian Education Board, Denationalized Schools
With the return of 10 Presbyterian schools, which the Pakistani government had taken over in 1972, the Presbyterian Education Board has assumed the responsibility of providing leadership for the staff and students and of starting the daunting task of getting both the buildings and academic programs back to a standard of excellence. During the 26 years the government has had control of the schools, buildings had deteriorated to the point where many classes are held outside because the buildings are unsafe. The need is great not only for restoration of buildings but also for the restoration of academic programs. |

Memorial Christian Hospital, Sialkot
In 1886 Dr. Maria White, a medical missionary appointed by the Board of Foreign Missions of India under the United Presbyterian Church of North America, opened a small dispensary in Sialkot in the northeast part of Pakistan near the Indian border. Sialkot is now a growing industrial city surrounded by poor rural areas. In 1978 a rural health care project was begun, designed to provide instruction to people in small villages about the need for immunizations, breast feeding, personal hygiene and sanitation. Memorial Christian Hospital has grown to a 300-bed facility providing a full range of health services and specialized care in obstetrics and gynecology. The hospital supports a highly respected nursing school and extensive educational programs in infant health, hygiene and sanitation and rural health care. |

Rawalpindi Leprosy Hospital
Rawalpindi Leprosy Hospital, founded in 1904 by an American professor, serves victims of Hansen's Disease in the northern part of Pakistan. Rawalpindi is a referral hospital, but not an ordinary one because many of the patients come from far away. Emphasis is put on physical, psychological and social rehabilitation of leprosy patients. Of the over 2,900 patients registered, only 24 permanently live at the hospital. All others are outpatients or are admitted temporarily. |
