Children and Youth

Children of Romania

Contributions to this fund will give new hope to thousands of Romanian children living in poverty and isolation caused by this country's disastrous economic situation, dysfunctional families and poverty. The efforts of PC(USA) to help these children include joining the Orthodox and Reformed Churches in Romania in supporting AIDRom with its emphasis on street children.

Big-Hearted Grannies

Noroc is Romanian for "God Bless." This reflects the mission to share God's blessings by providing New Opportunities for Romanian Orphaned Children spiritually, developmentally, socially and medically. Over 125,000 abandoned children are in need of love in Romanian orphanages. The Big-Hearted Grannies program provides them with loving care and also provides retired Romanian citizens a chance to make a difference. This program gives individual attention and sensory therapy to nearly 200 babies and toddlers in orphanages in Tulcea, Romania, while the Big-Hearted Teachers and Friends assist the school-age children. The Rev. Mary Ferris successfully nurtures the spiritual lives of these orphans and prepares older orphans to lead productive lives after they leave the institutions.

Education

Romanian English Language Project

Funds are urgently needed to provide educational materials and faculty training opportunities for the new PC(USA) English as a Foreign Language program in Romania. This ECO project will furnish textbooks, workbooks, teacher’s manuals, cassettes, visuals and related instructional aids. Funds will also be used for teacher development seminars, special lectures and TEFL symposiums. This exciting new educational ministry, which serves hundreds of seminarians, teachers and high school youth in the Transylvania district, is the first venture of its kind since the revolution, and it marks an immediate response to an invitation from our Christian sisters and brothers who are only now emerging from years of tyranny and oppression.
