Russia
Since the end of Communist rule in 1991 the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has significantly deepened its relationships with the historic Christian churches in Russia. Today the PC(USA) maintains close connections through mission personnel and a wide variety of engagement by individuals, congregations, presbyteries, synods, mission support groups and the General Assembly Mission Council staff.
PC(USA) mission in Russia rests on four pillars:
- Congregational partnerships or “twinning” between Presbyterian and Russian congregations (Orthodox, Baptist, and Lutheran)
- Support to theological/Christian education (seminaries, Bible institutes, schools, and curriculum publishing)
- Support to churches seeking to spread the Good News to peoples who have not heard it
- Diaconal projects such as support to children and orphanages, HIV/AIDS education and prevention, medical outreach, etc.
The historic churches in Russia are in a period of spiritual and physical renewal following almost 75 years of state-sponsored atheism, repression, exile, and martyrdom. In this period of renewal there are many ways “to come alongside” our brothers and sisters in Christ in Russia , including:
- Support for sharing the Good News through our partner churches
- “Twinning” or partnering with a Russian congregation
- Summer camps for children and youth
- Support for Christian day schools
- Teachers of English in Christian schools or in congregational programs
- Short-term theological education at seminaries and Bible institutes
- Support for Russian students in seminary
- Publications of the Narnia Center ( Moscow )
- Development of children’s ministries
- Support for orphanages
- HIV/AIDS education and prevention
- Support of refugees
- Strengthening anti-racism programs
- Drug and alcohol abuse education with OPORA, a Christian recovery program
