Extra Commitment Opportunities

There is a channel through which gifts can be designated for specific items that support the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)'s work around the world. These are called Extra Commitment Opportunities (ECOs). You can give directly to an ECO account online or by mailing your check designating the name and account number of the particular item you have chosen to:

Children and Youth

Korean Children Service Program

In Korea many children have no one to care for them while their parents work. Contributions to this fund can help provide a loving Christian environment with trained staff and volunteers for children under school age and scholarships for junior high school students so that they can continue their education.

Education

The Center for World Mission in Korea

The Presbyterian Theological Seminary ( Seoul ) is the primary theological education institution for the Presbyterian Church of Korea. All those preparing for the ordained ministry must spend some time studying here. Funds are needed for scholarships for students from rural areas of Korea and from other nations in Asia.

Hanil Theological Seminary

The seminary, located in Chonju is a regional seminary which provides a college-level education for the preparation of persons, especially women, for Christian leadership. Students are trained for positions as Christian educators music directors, visiting ministers, kindergarten teachers, hospital and factory chaplains and social workers. There is a continuing need for scholarship funds, audiovisual equipment, furniture and funds for field work in agriculture, industry.

Library Challenge, Presbyterian Theological Seminary

The Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Seoul is the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Korea's training institute for ministers. Built for 300 students, it now has approximately 2,000 students. The chapel and library facilities need to be expanded. The seminary is requesting a challenge fund of $250,000 for the library building expansion.

Ulaanbaatar College

After having been a part of a socialistic regime for 70 years, Mongolia has recently opened its country for mission and education. Ulaanbaatar College was founded by missionaries of the PC(USA)’s partner church in Korea. Assistance is requested for their library, computers and scholarships for Mongolian students.

Evangelism

Evangelism in New Industrial Areas, Korea

This project will help to develop churches and provide programs for the many young workers who move to cities to find work in newly developed industrial areas.

Cumberland Hospital (Korea)

Cumberland Hospital is a satellite hospital of the Presbyterian Medical Center and was begun with startup funds from First Presbyterian Church, Cumberland, Maryland.

Presbyterian Medical Center (Jesus Hospital), Chonju, South Korea

For more than 90 years the church has been working with the people of this area to provide both medical and evangelistic training. Financial support is needed to replace old equipment and to subsidize care for those who cannot afford to pay.

Wilson Leprosy Center

The Wilson Leprosy Center, located in Soonchun, provides treatment for leprosy as well as rehabilitative services, including physical therapy, prosthetics and social services. It has an excellent vocational rehabilitation unit where students can learn new trades such as sewing and tailoring. Funds are needed for braces, artificial limbs, medical supplies, pharmaceuticals and training.

Human Rights, Justice and Peacemaking

Peace and Reunification Program 

This project supports meetings, visits and other attempts by Koreans and non-Koreans to reduce tension on the peninsula in the hope of creating a climate for the peaceful reunification of North and South Korea.

Mission Personnel

The Rev. Daniel J. and The Rev. Carol Chou Adams — Professor of Theology/Professor of Christian Education

Dan and Carol Adams have taught at Hanil University in Jeonju and Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Seoul for more than 20 years. Dan is a professor of theology and Carol a professor of Christian education. Both ordained PC(USA) ministers, they also write theological textbooks and serve as co-pastors of the Jeonju English Church.

  The Rev. Seek Hee and K. J. Bae — Ministry to Women, Presbyterian Church of Korea

Sook Hee Bae, an ordained PC(USA) minister, serves in Seoul ministering to the Women Ministers Association of the Presbyterian Church of Korea (PCK). She provides a ministry of compassion with battered women and runaway teenagers. She also works to empower PCK women by offering continuing education, professional counseling and workshops on the role of women’s ministry. K. J. Bae has been appointed to work alongside his wife in this ministry.

The Rev. Arthur and Sue Kinsler — Financial Representative, Professor/Advisor to Handicapped Workshops

Art Kinsler, an ordained PC(USA) minister, is now retired but continues to serve as a volunteer, assisting the Presbyterian Church of Korea as the PC(USA)’s financial representative in Korea. He also teaches a college course and preaches at Yonsei University’s global worship and in Korean congregations. Sue assists with a sheltered workshop for people with disabilities, runs a program to feed young children in North Korea, and helps with medical needs. Art and Sue have served in Korea for more than 30 years.

  Dr. Simon and Haejung Park — Associate Chaplain/Financial and Managerial Consultant

Simon and Haejung Park were commissioned to mission service with the PC(USA) in 1998. After serving for three years in Congo, three years in Nepal, and three years in the United States, the Parks moved in January 2007 to serve in South Korea, the country of their birth. Haejung is associate in the chaplain’s office of Hannam University in Daejeon, assisting the chaplains and the staff as they nurture the university community in the spirit of Christ. Haejung and Simon accompany the university community on behalf of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and help develop closer ties between the PC(USA) and the university.

Refugees

Ministry to Needy Koreans in China

There are many Korean refugees in Liaoning Province in China along the China–North Korea border. The Xi Ta Christian Church has been extending its service ministry to these refugees, and the PC(USA) has been asked to assist them with funds to provide food, clothing and other needs.

Women's Programs

Shelter for the Battered Women

The Women Minister's Association of the Presbyterian Church of Korea (PCK) opened a shelter for victims of domestic violence following passage of the Violence Against Women Act in 1999. Due to the limited fund they are in need of support in providing crisis counseling for women who are wounded physically, mentally and spiritually; training volunteers to support the women at a critical time in their lives; and maintaining the shelter itself.

Korean Minority Ministry in Shenyang, China

This project will support the work of churches with ministries to the blind and provide eyesight recovery operations such as cataracts and glaucoma. It will also provide Braille Bibles and hymnals, white canes and scholarship funds for blind students.
