Uganda

Uganda has had a history of civil war and much violence, but is now relatively peaceful and stable. It is the best-educated country in Africa.

The Presbyterian Church in East Africa is registered as a church in Uganda, with four Presbyterian communities. The PC(USA) relates to the parachurch NGO Back to God Ministry, in Kangale, which was founded by a Presbyterian. It is very active, with schools and an agricultural program. In Kampala there are seven congregations that are calling themselves a presbytery. The Rev. Paul Ssemwanga, the moderator, is in correspondence with the PC(USA).

In 2000 the PC(USA)’s Presbyterian Women, through its Birthday Offering and Thank Offering, provided a grant to the community of Muyambe to drill wells to provide access to safe water. The massive education effort in Uganda to combat AIDS/HIV has become a model for HIV ministry.
