Presbytery of South Louisiana
In response to disasters and the needs of neighbors, the PSL site seeks to serve others through organizations and congregations participating in building and rebuilding the community around them. Southern Louisiana and the Gulf Coast have seen the incredible strides that could only be made through the hands and hearts of volunteers.
Project Homecoming: Volunteers help the organization fulfill housing needs of low income, elderly and disabled individuals affected by the hurricanes of 2005 through various positions.
Faith Presbyterian Church: Volunteers partner with this diverse and active congregation in developing outreach ministries to young adults, returning military and their families, children and the community-at-large.
Ochsner Health System: Volunteers gain skills in providing spiritual support to hospital patients, families, staff and visitors in the healing process of the mind, body and spirit.
First Presbyterian Church: Volunteers help address the needs of the largest homeless population in proportion to any other city in the country through the outreach of this diverse and urban congregation.
Center for Hazards Assessment Response & Technology (CHART): Volunteers facilitate education outreach program focused on environmental advocacy, specifically the issues of coastal restoration.
Lakeview Presbyterian Church: Volunteers support the Christian education program of the congregation through curriculum development for the youth and children of the church as well as the Day School serving the surrounding community.
Chinese Presbyterian Church: Volunteers assist the congregation’s ministry in engaging international students of local universities and other Chinese immigrants, particularly through English classes. Opportunities to work with children, young adults and music ministries are also available.
Volunteers live in an urban neighborhood, sharing a duplex which can house eight volunteers.
Volunteers will meet weekly as a community to reflect on their mission experiences, concerns, vocational call and faith journey. This includes Bible study, devotionals and a commitment to journaling/blogging/newsletter writing. Volunteers commit to intentional, covenantal and simple living. Three local retreats provide time for spiritual renewal, with the spring retreat focused on vocational discernment. Support and encouragement will be found through other volunteers, site coordinator, congregation members, personal mentors and the community that truly appreciates the sacrifice of volunteers.
