Presbytery of South Louisiana
Volunteers will serve program needs of churches and agencies of southern Louisiana to respond to the realities of disaster in the lives of individuals and communities.
Placements are in either disaster recovery or in ministries with local congregations. Placements in disaster recovery work with Project Homecoming to manage volunteer mission teams who come from around the country to rebuild homes in partnership with low-income families. Placements with local congregations focus on renewal and redevelopment in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, assisting with community outreach ministries, Christian education, and youth ministries. All placements are part of the Presbytery of South Louisiana's Hurricane Katrina recovery effort.
Volunteers will work in the greater New Orleans area, which is still recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Volunteers live in community, sharing rooms in a duplex which can house 8 volunteers. There is an emphasis on intentional, covenant community, vocational discernment and simple living.
Volunteers will meet weekly as a community to reflect on their mission experiences, concerns, vocational call and faith journey. This includes book studies, Bible study, devotionals and a commitment to journaling/blogging/newsletter writing. The program also includes one day each month in community where we explore how our faith relates to a topic of interest, whether it be finances, race, poverty, conflict, interpersonal relationships, etc. The mid-year retreat focuses on vocational discernment.
Age: 20-29
