Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA)

YAVs in Kenya relax after a hard day’s work. From the MSR archive. For years, the Presbyterian Church in East Africa has been a leader within the wider Christian community in evangelism and outreach as well as addressing social issues. Kenya Young Adult Volunteers serve in churches and ecumenical ministries approved by the PCEA, one of the fastest growing denominations in the world. Volunteers will have the opportunity to develop their faith while serving a church known for its spiritual discipline, lay involvement, social ministry and phenomenal growth. Participants will take an active part in the life of the local church and live in communities that are culturally, socially, economically and theologically diverse.
Volunteers may serve in the following types of ministries in urban or rural areas:
- training children, young adults and the unemployed
- PCEA congregational outreach ministries to marginalized groups
- working with refugees from neighboring African nations
- assisting women’s projects
- participating in health awareness activities
- working with ecumenical organizations such as Church World Service, All Africa Council of Churches and others.
- working as a communications representative for organizations by writing articles, designing websites, and creating reports for U.S. partners.
- living and working at a halfway house for women helping them find work outside the sex trade.
Volunteers may stay in either a family’s home, in an apartment or dorm.
Placement sites will be in close proximity to one another and volunteers will have access to a Site Coordinator and a spiritual mentor from the local community in order to learn from, with and about Christians in Kenya. There will be opportunities to learn a traditional language and travel to various parts of East Africa for mission work/study and group retreats.
