Seattle Urban Intentional Community Program (SUIC)

Photo from the collection of Kelli Houpt.Volunteers with the Seattle Urban Intentional Community partner with local urban ministries and churches and invest their lives in service to urban youth, immigrant families and the homeless. This site is a “tent-making community,” meaning that YAVs at this site find full-time employment in addition to spending time volunteering in the community each week. In this way, young adults learn to translate work, ministry and Christian community into a balanced lifestyle of service and hope.
In addition to the full-time employment that the YAV is expected to secure and maintain throughout the year, volunteers are expected to spend seven to 10 hours each week volunteering with ministry partners in the neighborhood in which they live. Volunteer opportunities are with congregations and social service agencies in the areas of:
- Education (such as after-school program)
- Health Ministries
- Refugee Ministries
All volunteers live together in intentional community houses. These houses are co-ed, and volunteers may be expected to share a room.
Each volunteer house has set times of prayer, fellowship and discipleship each week. All volunteers are expected to be Christians, seeking to actively serve and grow in their faith. The site coordinator facilitates discipleship and spiritual formation for the volunteers.
Over the course of the year, our volunteers meet weekly to discuss matters of significance to the needs of the city where they are working. They meet with local experts to provide perspective on the social and economic realities in their neighborhoods. They explore God’s heart for social justice, racial reconciliation and the poor and put what they learn into action by partnering with local leadership and existing urban ministries.
