The major objective of this program is to help the volunteers to rediscover the meaning of their Christian faith in the context of micro and macro level injustices in the world. The volunteers are placed in the metropolitan Daejeon area, in the central region of the country. Since the first Presbyterian missionaries arrived in 1886, the country has built a strong Christian history and presence. During the phase of rapid economic growth, many sectors of Korea developed in uneven pace resulting in large gaps between communities. Placements are selected and designed to offer opportunities to young adult volunteers to recognize the circumstances and contribute to the community with Christian perspectives. Initial intensive language training will be augmented over the entire period of service. Most placements will include teaching or assisting with the English language, participation in worship lives of local churches and working with Korean young adults in partnership.
The volunteers will be placed in educational institutions, local churches, after school programs and community development programs. They will also have opportunities relate to a worshipping community. Teaching English, writing and editing web-based publications in English, preparation of newsletter are examples specific tasks in which the volunteers can engage. Individual assignments will be shaped with sufficient flexibility to enrich your experience and personal growth while at the same time witnessing Christ’s love in the community.
The volunteers will be initially housed on the campus of the Hannam University during the initial period of training. Depending on the service location, the volunteers will live with host families or other suitable housing options. Living arrangements are carefully chosen to provide healthy and safe conditions and opportunities to interact with Korean people and food.
The volunteers meet once a month with the coordinator for a retreat, and they jointly undertake many activities that will build a strong sense of community and system of support. Many activities are planned to provide exposure to culture, history and faith lives in Korea.

Education: College degree or equivalent
Other: The ability to learn another language; ability to work in teams under general supervision. Ability to adjust personal expectations and preferences to properly respond to the needs of the community.
