Eating the Faith

More on food and prayer. Ever get stuck choosing a restaurant, or have trouble figuring out what to make for dinner? (I know ... "first world problems.")

Many of us use the Book of Common Worship — Daily Prayer as a resource for daily devotion. But it recently occurred to me that the Thanksgivings and Intercessions of Morning Prayer could also be culinary companion. On each day of the week, the BCW-DP invites us to pray for the church in a particular part of the world:

Sunday: the church of Jesus Christ in every land

Monday: the church in Europe

Tuesday: the church in Africa

Wednesday: the church in Asia and the Middle East

Thursday: the church in the Pacific region

Friday: the church in Latin America

Saturday: the church in North America

So if it's Monday, who's up for some pasta, paella, borscht or sauerbraten? On Wednesday, how about hummus, lo mein, kimchi, or pad thai? On Friday, will it be tamales, feijoada, enchiladas, or empanadas?

Okay, foodie friends — I'm mostly being facetious. In spite of our global culture and interconnected world, the fact is that most people don't have the luxury of  such a culinary cornucopia.

Most importantly, the weekly rhythm of daily prayer — with its geographical guidance — helps us to turn in our hearts, focus in our minds, and commit our resources to the mission and ministry of Christ's church throughout the world. (For instance, find out how you can help alleviate hunger around the globe through the Presbyterian Hunger Program.)

But next time I'm asked to bring food to a dinner party or select a place to eat, I just might consult the BCW. It might even be a good "entrée" to talk to someone about the discipline of daily prayer!

Well, it's Saturday. I guess I'll have a PB&J.
