The Beginning of the Good News

The lectionary readings for this Sunday, December 4, include the very first words of Mark's gospel: "The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God" (Mark 1:1).

As the church is immersed in gospel of Mark in the coming Year B of the Revised Common Lectionary, the Office of Theology and Worship offers a modest proposal: Why not host a public reading of the entire gospel of Mark in your congregation?

The earliest and shortest of the four gospels, Mark offers a compact, concise, and compelling account of “the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God” (Mark 1:1). It takes less than two hours to read the whole gospel of Mark out loud. By the gift of the Holy Spirit, this can be a life-changing, faith-shaping, disciple-making encounter with the living Word of God.

We have prepared resources for those who might be interested in taking up this challenge. You can download them here. If you plan to host a reading, let us know. We'd love to hear about your experience.
