About this blog

Brian Frick is the Associate for Camp and Conferences Ministries with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). He has been involved in camp and conference ministry since high school. For the past ten years, Brian has served as program director of Johnsonburg Center in New Jersey, Westminster Woods in California, and Heartland Center in Missouri.

Camp and conference ministry compliments and partners with other ministry aspects of our church to foster faith development and reflection. As our communities and our church changes, our ministries need to grow and adapt with creative and emergent programming and leadership to meet new realities.

These blogs entries, though varied, are intended to spur thought and conversation around the opportunities and challenges before us.

Celebrate! Young Adult Leadership and Discipleship Experiences Starting ALL over the country!

PCUSA Camps Transform Young Adults' Spiritual Lives

Fireworks to celebrateA celebration is called for!  Summer is starting across the country and thousands of our passionate young adults are embarking on a life changing summer living in Christian community.  This opportunity to teach and share their faith with campers, as well as live intentionally with other committed Christian leaders will transform them in ways they can’t even imagine.

I remember 20 years ago this month heading back to Camp Johnsonburg not as a camper, but as a counselor for the first time.  I was green and scared and the last thing I thought I was ready for was leading Bible study.  I left that summer 10 weeks later not as an expert, but as an energized, confident young adult with leadership skills that would be drawn on all my life.  My faith life was transformed because by leading discussions and having to answer questions as best I could, really made me own my faith in a way I never had at my parent's church.

These experiences are fundamental in the development of leaders in our churches and generally in laying a foundation for a life of faith for these young adults.

On Sunday, I had the honor of participating in the commissioning of the Heartland Camp Summer Staff.  I drew on Galatians 5:22-23 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. "

Basing our relationships as leaders on these Fruits allow our relations to campers to be welcoming and educational.

Please join me in praying for these young adults and the campers they will mentor this summer.
