About this blog

Through the Waters is the blog of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Christian vocation ministries. Because the ministry of Christian vocation affirms the need for all baptized Christians – including Presbyterians - to identify and claim their call to discipleship in each decision and life choice, this blog is designed to serve as a resource for youth and young adults, as well as those in ministry with them, to assist the Holy Spirit in God’s movement in this journey through the waters. Take some time to read and think about your own responses to the questions posed here. For additional resources, we suggest that you visit our website.

Unexpected Signs of Hope

I’m sure it’s not surprising that in getting this blog ready to launch and thinking about what it means to be a blogger – putting thoughts out there for anyone to read – I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about the theme. The bigger theme, of course, being vocation and call but also the underlying theme of water. So, imagine what it was like to “get away from it all” last week for a family vacation only to find it creeping up on me anyway.

We went to the beautiful Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. I hadn’t expected that water theme to follow me there - It was the big mountains I was focused on. But it turns out that the water in the ever present streams and waterfalls of that amazing spring-filled place were, literally, all around me.

Hope in the River

It was on our last day in the Park that I was able to snap this photo and it hit me. In the midst of water that has probably rushed these banks for hundreds or thousands of years, a sign of growth, hope, and new life. One small sprig of green grass rather unexpected in this place. But why not expect it…we’ve just experienced Easter, after all.

I invite you to join me in reflecting on this photo for yourself.
Where are there signs of new life for you?
Where do you see signs of God’s movement in your life?
In the rushing water of your own life, what has been the symbol of growth? Did you expect it?
