About this blog

Through the Waters is the blog of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Christian vocation ministries. Because the ministry of Christian vocation affirms the need for all baptized Christians – including Presbyterians - to identify and claim their call to discipleship in each decision and life choice, this blog is designed to serve as a resource for youth and young adults, as well as those in ministry with them, to assist the Holy Spirit in God’s movement in this journey through the waters. Take some time to read and think about your own responses to the questions posed here. For additional resources, we suggest that you visit our website.

Life as Ministry

I was recently in a meeting with an interesting mix of young people and adults. It was a church-related J0400173 meeting so what they each had in common was their love of Christ and his church. I’d venture to guess that there was only a short list of similarities beyond that. As a conversation about planning an event and what should be included continued on, one of the young men made a comment that has struck me so deeply that I’m still thinking about it.

“I guess” he said tentatively, “that I’ve always thought of my life as ministry and I’m having trouble putting myself in the place of someone who doesn’t.”

What an amazing gift I was given in that moment. Not only was I touched by such a powerful statement on God’s movement in the life of this young man but I’ve been able to focus, since then, on the thought of my own life as ministry.  What if we all, all of God’s children got it as he has?

Now I don’t live in too much of a rose-colored world to think that this makes everything easy or that this particular young man somehow lives a perfect life or even that young people like this one aren’t all around me, but it did get me thinking. So today, I’m changed a little bit by this voice; a voice that helped me stop and think about the amazing young people who are a part of the church, living as disciples - and also caused me to think about my own life as ministry. Maybe it can do the same for you.

How is your life a ministry?

If you asked around, would others identify it as such?

What is one additional way you could demonstrate your life as a disciple today?

What voices have you heard that have made you stop and think?
