Feasting on the Word Curriculum: Teaching the Revised Common Lectionary — a groundbreaking, lectionary-based curriculum that’s centered on the popular Feasting on the Word commentary series — is adding valuable new features to its curriculum line for churches this fall.

Beginning in fall 2013, Joining the Feast — an indispensable resource for pastors that nurtures the relationship between worship and education — will include children’s worship bulletins that feature a Bible story, coloring picture, and activity that engages children in a fun and peaceful way to the focus scripture for the week. By receiving their own bulletins, children are reminded that they are important members of the church community.

“Children delight in familiar stories, and encountering a story in several ways helps them hold it in their hearts. With these bulletins, children can read and see a picture of the story they explored in Sunday school as they hear about it in worship readings and preaching,” said Rebecca Grothe, children’s editor, Feasting on the Word Curriculum.

A weekly Bible story that can be told during the children’s time of worship will also be included in the quarterly subscription to Joining the Feast.

Feasting on the Word Curriculum — developed in partnership by Congregational Ministries Publishing and Presbyterian Publishing Corporation — is an ecumenical, downloadable resource that provides four different approaches for each of the lectionary readings in the Revised Common Lectionary.

Designed for a classroom setting among various age levels — children, youth, young adult, and adult — the curriculum enables everyone to explore the same Bible passage in church each week, making it easy for families to learn and live out their faith together.

“I love that [Feasting on the Word Curriculum] helps children and teachers learn about the flow of the church year,” said Barbi Smith, New Hope Presbyterian Church, St. Charles, Missouri. “That was really evident last year during the children’s time in worship on the first Sunday of Advent; when the pastor asked, ‘Does anyone know what today is?’ expecting the kids to say no, six hands went up. A first-grader answered, ‘The first Sunday in Advent.’”
