Freedom Schools

20,000 by 2014

Summer is a time when children should be able to broaden their horizons. But for many  children, opportunites are limited. For children at risk, summer can be a time when they sharpen their literacy skills and enhance their self-worth. Freedom Schools give children that chance.

The CDF Freedom Schools® program continues to expand across the country with a record 9,800 children served last year. This summer, Children's Defense Fund anticipates breaking that record by serving over 10,000 children,  putting the program on track to meet CDF's goal of serving over 20,000 children nationwide by July 1, 2014.  The number of partnerships with institutions of higher education, school districts and charter schools has increased. The goals for 2012 include growing partnerships in the juvenile justice system, foster care system and homeless shelters. The CDF Freedom Schools program will continue to transform lives and deliver high quality summer and after-school programming to children and families .

Last summer, Presbyterian churches like C N Jenkins  Memorial in Charlotte and Kwanzaa in Minneapolis hosted Freedom Schools. If you are interested in starting a CDF Freedom Schools site in your congregation,  there will be a general interest meeting for stakeholders next week, February 9th at CDF Haley Farm in Clinton, Tenn.  First responders will be served first.  Contact Ken Libby at klibby@childrensdefense.org or (865) 457-6466.
