A Service of Preparation for Holy Communion

This service of preparation for Holy Communion, based on the Beatitudes and adapted from the 1946 Book of Common Worship, provides a way for congregations to prepare for the celebration of the Lord’s Supper in keeping with the principles of the Directory for Worship. It is especially appropriate for the Season of Lent and other penitential occasions.  The section from the Beatitudes (following the sermon) might be excerpted for personal or small group use.

  2. Yes, Janine. It's easy to see why many historians credit this tradition with fueling the Great Awakenings in the US, huh? Small groups devoted to spiritual formation through the liturgy. All but Mercersburg theology seem to have lost the "through the liturgy" after the Great Awakenings, though. But how do you think theologically about the fencing of the table today?

  3. I first heard about the idea of preparation for Holy Communion in stories about the Kirk of Scottland; There was a quarterly gathering called the "communion season" starting with a gathering of perhaps several Presbyteries at a location. There would be discussion, preaching, "fencing the table", then a very moving service on the Lord's day, and sometimes an extra day of fellowship Monday before all returned home. I always have liked this picture! Makes me glad that I'm a Presbyterian!

  4. It's good to know that people think about preparing to meet the Lord in holy communion. We'd love to have a copy of your service, Elizabeth! If you're willing to share, send one to me at the above email address, please!

  5. Thank you for this new update of the Service of Preparation for Holy Communion based on the Beatitudes. I thought the church used to have a Service of Preparation for Holy Communion based on the Ten Commandments as well. I have worked on several possible services, using the Confessions and Creeds relating to Preparation for Holy Communion, in an attempt to restore our communal preparation for Communion.
