About this blog

Through the Waters is the blog of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Christian vocation ministries. Because the ministry of Christian vocation affirms the need for all baptized Christians – including Presbyterians - to identify and claim their call to discipleship in each decision and life choice, this blog is designed to serve as a resource for youth and young adults, as well as those in ministry with them, to assist the Holy Spirit in God’s movement in this journey through the waters. Take some time to read and think about your own responses to the questions posed here. For additional resources, we suggest that you visit our website.

Two Pinecones

I hate to be late for anything. As a result, I rush around before any appointment or gathering in order to get there on time. I tap my foot in the airport security line…only to arrive at my gate thirty-five minutes before boarding. I dash off to Sunday worship…only to be one of the first in my seat. I tear out of the driveway before the movies…only to finish all of my popcorn before the previews. It never fails. I’d rather not show up at all than to not be on time.

So, it’s no surprise then that as I was rushing to make it to an appointment, I ended up walking down the sidewalk to the entrance behind a toddler and his father. The two of them were walking side-by-side, making it impossible for me to pass without making it obvious that they were walking far too slowly. Well, saying they were walking may be an exaggeration.

pineconeAt almost every step, the little guy stopped to make a comment or to notice something along the way. “Look, Daddy. A pinecone!” I heard. This was followed quickly by, “One. Two pinecones.” The little boy then picked up both pinecones and, proudly, began to carry them while singing a sweet song with lyrics that only included the words, “two” and “pinecones.”

Still not being able to make around the two, I glanced at my watch and settled into step. While I didn’t get to the point of joining in on the Two Pinecone song, I did slow down. I began to walk with less purpose and with more relaxation. I began to walk as someone able to notice that there were pinecones all around me. On my many trips on this sidewalk, I’d never noticed them. Truthfully, I hadn’t even noticed that there were huge pine trees above me.

During this season of Lent, as we prepare for Christ’s death and resurrection, we have the opportunity to slow down. While our responsibilities and obligations may not change, the way we look at them can. Rather than rushing through a task, say a prayer for the person with whom you’re dealing. While sitting at the light that turned green thirty seconds ago, offer thanks to God for all that you are able to do. And during that walk into an important meeting or class, pick up a pinecone or two and sing a silly little song that reminds you of all that God has given.

When do you need to be reminded to slow down?

What are some ways that you can make a change for the better during this holy season of Lent?
