Services held for Dottie Hedgepeth

Longtime Christian educator succumbs to cancer at 69

July 13, 2010

LOUISVILLE

A memorial service was held July 12 at Springdale Presbyterian Church here for Dottie Hedgepeth, whose smile brightened the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) at all levels of the denomination.

Hedgepeth, the widow of H. William "Bill" Peterson, died July 5 at age 69 after battling cancer.

Born in Pittsburgh, Hedgepeth grew up in California. She dedicated her life to educational ministry in the PC(USA), serving on the staff of two Presbyterian congregations and then Santa Barbara Presbytery. In 1988 she moved to Louisville, accepting a position as coordinator of theological education.

She was a tireless and winning advocate for educational ministry and theological education.

Dottie Hedgepeth is survived by her daughters, Lora Coomes and Jana McKee; stepdaughters Katherine Rich and Karin Peterson; stepsons Nils Peterson and Michael Peterson; and seven grandchildren.

  1. Dottie was a mentor and friend. I worked very closely with her when I served on the APCE Board in the late 1980's and early 1990's. She was an advocate for excellence in the service of Christ. She will be sorely missed. May God comfort her family.
