Asia and the Pacific
The Asia and Pacific Region encompasses a profound uniqueness and diversity stretching across the largest geographical space that the PC(USA) considers one region. There is no single common denominator that unites the Asia and the Pacific Region, except that it shares a common geographical area of the globe
It is God’s marvelous tapestry of diverse cultures, languages, climates, economies brought together by a common region called Asia and the Pacific.
This region is large and spread out, spanning 7500 miles from the northern tip of China and Hokkaido, Japan, down to as far south as New Zealand, and 8000 miles from the western border of Pakistan to the Pacific Islands of Polynesia.
Within the tapestry are a diverse spiritual people. Spread across Asia are all the major religion of the world and of the four largest religions in the word, Asia is host to the largest population of three of these four religions.
In this context, the Global Ecumenical Partnerships ministry area, through the Partnership Beyond the PC(USA) with churches and the people of Asia and the Pacific have had to expand from the Preaching, Teaching and Healing ministries toward participating in a constellation of ministries that include economics development, disaster relief, human rights and political advocacy, educational theater, migration and human trafficking, peace and reconciliation.
Earlier mission experience now being appreciated by the Presbyterian Mission coordinating bodies formalized the “Three-priority Mission Initiative” of Preaching, Teaching and Healing. For this purpose, equal effort was placed on the recruitment of Christian medical professionals, teaching professional and ministerial professionals.
Today we continue to engage with this broad range of historical partners related to the earliest “Three-priority Mission Initiative”, in full affirmation of local leadership. Our contributions have been in new ways of supporting through advocacy, leadership development, and material support.
