This fall, the South Central Region of the Presbyterian Association of Musicians invites church musicians, worship leaders, and music lovers of all denominations to a transformative experience: "From Shadows to Saints," a three-day symposium blending the mystery of sacred music with the joy of community and learning. Held October 29–30 and November 1 at First United Methodist Church in Denton, Texas, this event promises to be a highlight of the liturgical season. Registration is now open.

At the heart of "From Shadows to Saints" is a full-scale performance of Mozart’s "Requiem," one of the most revered and emotionally powerful works in the choral canon. Participants will have the opportunity to sing this masterpiece with a full orchestra in observance of All Saints' Day.

The Requiem’s haunting beauty and spiritual depth make it a fitting centerpiece for a symposium that explores the themes of remembrance, resurrection, and renewal. Singing it in community — surrounded by fellow musicians and worshipers — offers a profound way to honor the saints who have gone before and to reflect on the sacred mysteries of life and death.

In addition to the Requiem performance, "From Shadows to Saints" features dynamic learning sessions led by expert musicians and theologians. These workshops will delve into the theological and musical dimensions of All Saints’ Day, offering practical insights for worship planning, choral leadership, and spiritual formation.

Dr. Josh Taylor

Dr. Josh Taylor, director of Worship & Music at First United Methodist Church Denton and instructor of Sacred Music at University of North Texas, will lead rehearsals and the performance of the Mozart Requiem. Hymnwriter and theologian the Rev. John Thornburg will present a keynote address and lead a roundtable discussion for directors. Dr. Laura Toles, a speech-language pathologist, will lead a session on vocal health. Dr. Michael Conrady co-leads a session for directors or church musicians interested in exploring the sacred music offerings at the University of North Texas. Conrady and Dr. Malcom Matthews, assistant professor of organ/harpsichord at UNT, will perform the Halloween-themed organ recital adding a playful and creative twist to the weekend.

This event celebrates the joy and imagination of music-making, reminding us that sacred music can be both reverent and fun. While PAM is rooted in the Presbyterian tradition, "From Shadows to Saints" is open to musicians and worship leaders from all denominations. The event is designed to foster ecumenical collaboration and shared learning, welcoming anyone who values the role of music in worship and spiritual life.

Registration information and the full schedule will be available soon on the South Central Region page. Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged.
