Co-Moderators announce the names of committee leaders for the 227th General Assembly
‘We were moved by the quality and depth of the applications we received’ says the Rev. CeCe Armstrong
LOUISVILLE — The Rev. Tony Larson and the Rev. CeCe Armstrong, Co-Moderators of the 226th General Assembly (2024), have announced the names of committee moderators and vice-moderators for the 227th General Assembly, which will be held June 22-July 2 online and in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Larson described a selection process “grounded in Presbyterian values of fairness, diversity, and faithful discernment.”
According to the Co-Moderators, commissioners who wished to be considered for committee leadership were invited to submit a detailed written application addressing their experience as moderators and facilitators, their leadership style, their approach to managing stress and conflict, their capacity to remain impartial on contentious matters, and their competency with the hybrid technology environment in which GA committees now operate.
The applicants were made anonymous before the Co-Moderators began discerning committee leadership. Identifying information including names, demographic data, presbyteries and contact details were removed so the Co-Moderators could evaluate each applicant’s responses on the merits alone.
Following that initial anonymous review and ranking, the full applications, including demographic information, were considered to ensure that, as Larson noted, “the leadership cohort as a whole reflects the breadth of the church’s diversity across race, ethnicity, gender, orientation status, geography, sexual orientation and theological perspective.”
Reference checks were then conducted for the finalists before invitations were extended.
“We were moved by the quality and depth of the applications we received,” Armstrong said. “These are leaders who have thought carefully about what it means to moderate faithfully, to hold space for every voice, to safeguard fair process and to trust the Holy Spirit to move through the Assembly’s work.”
“One of the great joys of this journey has been doing the work alongside my Co-Moderator, the Rev. CeCe Armstrong,” Larson said. “From the very beginning, we approached this process together: prayerfully, carefully and with open hands. What the Spirit placed before us was a cohort of leaders who represent the remarkable diversity of who the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) actually is. We did not manufacture that. We discerned it. And we are excited to equip, support and collaboratively moderate the Assembly alongside this team.”
